Role Summary
Quantium’s Retail business uses advanced analytics and AI to help retailers understand customer behaviour, optimise operations, and unlock sales growth through smarter decision-making.
Behind every insight is production-grade data infrastructure. As Engineering Manager – Data Engineering, you will lead the teams responsible for building and evolving the pipelines and platforms that power retail analytics and AI in real-world environments.
This is a leadership role anchored in real engineering impact. You will not be removed from the technical context, but your primary focus will be building strong teams, setting direction, and ensuring delivery outcomes align with Retail’s commercial priorities. It suits someone who enjoys guiding engineers, shaping systems at a strategic level, and operating where data, AI and business needs intersect.
How will you make an impact?
- Lead high-performing data engineering teams
Lead distributed data engineering squads, coaching engineering leads and creating an environment of accountability, clarity and continuous improvement.
- Build resilient, scalable data systems
Oversee the design and evolution of data pipelines and production data platforms that support advanced analytics and AI solutions used by major retailers.
- Align engineering to business outcomes
Translate commercial objectives into clear engineering priorities, ensuring the team’s work drives measurable improvements in efficiency, speed and impact.
- Lift engineering standards
Strengthen planning, execution and operational discipline across squads. Bring structure where needed, without adding unnecessary process.
- Drive cross-functional execution
Partner closely with AI, platform and application engineering leaders to ensure solutions are cohesive end-to-end, not fragmented by domain.
- Act as the accountable domain leader
Be the recognised point of leadership for data engineering within Retail, proactively managing risks, delivery health and stakeholder confidence.
The superpowers you will bring to the team
- Experience leading production data engineering teams
You’ve led teams building and operating business-critical data systems, with strong instincts around reliability, scalability and operational discipline.
- Ability to coach and grow engineering leads
You strengthen the layer beneath you. You’ve supported leads in developing leadership capability, not just technical output.
- Solid grasp of modern cloud data architecture
You can engage meaningfully on ingestion, transformation, orchestration and storage decisions, and understand trade-offs across cost, performance and maintainability.
- Commercial judgment alongside technical depth
You balance quality, speed and efficiency, and can align engineering priorities with business outcomes.
- Comfort operating in ambiguity
You create clarity, focus and momentum when scope evolves or priorities shift.
- Strong stakeholder presence
You communicate trade-offs clearly, manage expectations well, and represent your domain with confidence.
- Curiosity about AI-enabled systems
You’ve worked in or alongside AI and advanced analytics environments, and are comfortable supporting AI use cases through robust data foundations.
